This is where I use to go to Brownies its looking a bit run down. The building had a huge hall, a canteen, and rooms up stairs. When we went to Brownies on a friday night there was a ballet lesson happening upstairs we use to be able to hear the piano music in the hall.
I photographed xmas activities, the girls were making christmas objects out of rubbish. They had a competition for the best. They also played fruit salad, wink murder, and dead fishes. I got a couple of good shots that day.

This one of the many strange memories of Brownies. I will always remember the massive mushroom and the pond with the owl. I didn't understand what I was suppose to say when Brown old wrapped my scarf around my eyes. I was suppose to say 'myself' it took me about three turns for me to get it right. This was part of the Promise, I looked into the water and then I saw that I was a Brownie elf. We also use to sing a song about fairies whilst getting into a circle at the beginning of the meeting, I can't remember the song and can't find any information on it I think it was just something our pack use to sing.

Here is the Guide Promise and Guide laws I would like to put with my photographs.

The Guide Promise is:

I promise that I will do my best:
To love my God,
To serve the Queen and my country,
To help other people
and
To keep the Guide Law
.

The Guide Law is:

A Guide:

  • is honest, reliable and can be trusted
  • is helpful and uses her time and abilities wisely
  • faces challenges and learns from her experience
  • is a good friend and a sister to all Guides
  • is polite and considerate
  • respects all living things and takes care of the world around her.

This book is for the Centenary. It has the history of Guiding, about the present and about the future. It has many pictures and photographs of Guiding over the past 100 years.
BBC 4 also produced a documentary of the history of Guiding and Chiff-Chaff Chums from picture this series 3 in the 90's.
I volunteered to become a story gather for the centenary but I realised that I wouldn't have enough time to do so with finishing my last year of my photography course, I thought that this project would contribute to the centenary of Guiding. There has been and will be many celebrations this year for the centenary if you go onto the centenary website you can see the list of activities that will and have been happening.

Images from book. Brownie log book during second World War, I like this use of text and image with text and image around a photograph. The second image was drawn by Beatrix Potter for a present for a Birthday Guide who was at Guide Camp on Potter's land in 1928.

On the 23rd of November the Guides went to the local fire station to learn about fire safety for their fire safety badge. They really enjoyed themselves they got to use the hose, they did a questionnaire, and got to look at the fire engines.

On March the 5th 2006 my home got broken into, they stole all my Guide badges and my baby teeth. This is all I have left from my years of Guiding. The doll was from my Guides leaders when I left to move away to another town. I have two certificates one from years at Brownies and the other for when I completed my Baden-Powell Challenge.

Relaxation evening. This so far was my best shoot, as the girls know who I am now, I was able to get more natural photographs with out them hiding from the camera.
I photographed November Camp and Remembrance Sunday, the Remembrance march was rained off so we all ended up going to the church, I wasn't able to get many photographs because of this.

1st shoot: Bonfire biscuits, camp meeting, and games first aid box, hedgehogs, and Chinese whispers. The girls were aware of me being there they kept on hiding and screaming from the camera but they became less aware of me further through the meeting, this is where I got the better photographs. I think the more they get to know who I am the better the photographs will be.

I Promise. Will be a body of photographs celebrating 100 years Centenary of Girl Guiding. I wanted to photograph Rainbows, Brownies, and Guides, saying their Promise, but are all on a Monday night at different halls this will be difficult to photograph all three so I am just going to photograph the Guides.I have been given the timetable for the Guides autumn term which has some exciting challenges to photograph including work towards fire safety badge, relaxation evening, bonfire night, swimming, Christmas celebrations, and a walk from Hove Lagoon to Brighton Pier for fish and chips and just photographing weekly at the Guide hall completing badges, making things, games, flag and taps. The text will be the Guide Promise, or maybe as well the Guide laws and camp songs.
